Introduction To Fossil Fuels

Historically, Idaho Power has relied on hydroelectric power to meet our power needs. But demand has grown far beyond the capacity of our hydro resources, and dependable, low-cost alternatives are needed.

Idaho Power has depended upon coal for more than 30 years with part ownership in three coal-fired plants located in Oregon, Nevada and Wyoming. Here in the West, coal is both affordable and plentiful, and converting it to electricity is cleaner than ever.

We also own and operate two natural gas-fired power plants, mostly used to meet demand during peak usage periods.

It is with a deep understanding of the environmental impacts of using coal and other fossil fuels that we are committed to finding a solution that strikes the best balance between reliability, affordability and environmental impact.
