Didn’t Rates Just Go Up June 1?

Rates in Idaho were increased June 1 by an average of 14.5 percent. This was implementation of the annual Power Cost Adjustment, an annual change made to reflect the changes in specific costs of obtaining or producing electricity for our customers. It is largely affected by the level of snow pack accumulated during the preceding winter.

Because snow pack levels fluctuate from year-to-year, so does the Power Cost Adjustment. In some years rates go down, as they did last year when they decreased approximately 19 percent. In other years rates go up, as they did this year.

The Power Cost Adjustment is limited to power production costs. Our general rate increase request is a separate event focused primarily on the:

  • Amount of money the company has invested in our electrical system
  • Business systems that support every day service activities, and
  • Increases in costs we have experienced as a business.
