Facts And History

With 17 hydroelectric projects as our primary generating source, Idaho Power has long been aware of the benefits of renewable resources.

We’ve been involved in renewable energy projects that have employed solar energy—including participation in a U.S. Department of Energy project that placed 90 solar panels on the roof of our corporate headquarters which offsets some of the company's electrcity use. This solar array receives an average of five hours of sunlight per day throughout the year and supplies just over 100 kilowatt-hours per day—about what three average homes would consume.

Through PURPA (the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978) we have worked with the developers of various renewable technologies including a landfill gas project, turbines driven by methane gas produced from sewer waste, and wind and geothermal energy. And today, Idaho Power is committed to the purchase of electricity from various wind projects totaling almost 400 megawatts.
